This is an event for everybody, of all ages and interests.
The Victorian Military Tattoo is a full living history event including the Garrisoning of one of Britain’s finest Victorian Fortresses. Meet the Queen, see the horses, carriages, cavalry, artillery, infantry, the Drums and Victorian people.
The Soldiers of the Queen...
Soldiers of the Queen, that is Queen Victoria, are coming together from all over the country to form this Garrison at the Nothe Fort and Gardens. The Regiments; The Green Howards, The 24th of Foot of Zulu War fame, The Middlesex Regiment - Diehard Company, the famous 11th and 15th Hussars, mounted on eight magnificent horses will be setting up a camp of the famous British bell tents, called the 'Lines', exactly like soldiers would have done 150 years ago. The Royal Artillery will be stationed inside the Fort as they are hosting the Garrison.
Wonderful military music...
The Cambridgeshire ACF Corps of Drums resplendent in scarlet tunics and Home Service helmets will be parading and playing wonderful military music. A chance to play the drums will be available to all. The Royal Piper, dressed in his dashing kilt of Seaforth Highlanders tartan, will be playing through the gardens... march behind him to the beat of the drummers. Artillery in their dark blue uniforms, with guns and cannons will be on display, firing the noon day gun each day to signal the start of lunch!
Visit the Officers Mess and see the fine silver and style the Officers lived in in the field.
One of the most famous British Cavalry regiments, the 11th and 15th Hussars with Busby’s and wonderful embroidered uniforms, carrying swords and mounted on beautiful chargers, will be escorting Queen Victoria’s Royal procession including an amazing Rolls Royce, right the way through Weymouth, from the Lodmoor area all the way down the Esplanade, through the Old Town and upto the Fort.
An exciting and busy event timetable...
Within the gardens there will be games to play, including skittles - real Victorian wooden skittles, Coits - played with the big horseshoes from the Shire horses that will have pulled Queen Victoria in her carriage, and Punch and Judy battling it out in their wonderful way. There will be delicious food, ice cream and sweets to buy and enjoy.
An exciting and busy event timetable has been produced to ensure you have a constant, marvellous, fun, interesting, educational and rewarding day, learning from the soldiers about the history and style of life in these important developing years of our country. You will be able to see the famous Changing of the Guard Ceremony, drill practice’s, full scale parades, gun firing drills and witness life as a soldier in garrison and some of the daily routines. On Saturday evening come to the Sunset Ceremony, there is so much to see and do and there won’t be a dull moment.
Bring a picnic lunch and stroll around lapping up the history, learn something new, and get inspired, you could even dress up as Victorians for the day! There are special prizes for the best dressed Victorian man, woman, boy and girl presented by Queen Victoria. There will be people representing all the groups from the Council to the Cavalry so if you fancy 'Joining up' - why not - this will be the place to do it!
